Jesus in the rubble
I have been on several debris cleaning teams from tornado damage but was completely unprepared for what I saw in Alabama. I have stood in the midst of the rubble left by tornado's but this time I was on the teams that helped to reclaim personal items. As we drove past the devastation, I was shocked. Entire subdivisions were gone. A few walls stood on a few houses, but most of them were totally destroyed. Trees were stacked up along side of the road and debris was everywhere. I thanked God that so many lives were spared.
We pulled into the subdivision that we were helping and began to unload all the supplies. We had driven all night and were anxious to get moving, so we tackled our task with ease and excitement. We wanted to get our hands dirty.
Many on the team had just graduated from our Cross Training Class on April 2nd and had never been deployed before. They were just as ready to dive in as I was. We divided the team into three smaller teams and got busy.
I was on the team that went into a home to reclaim her personal objects. She had broken her back in the tornado and could not get anything out. I could barely believe my eyes as we stepped into her yard. The first thought I had was, where do you start. debris was everywhere. We climbed through the rubble to get to what was left of the kitchen. There was two walls in tact. The roof and back wall were gone and food was scattered everywhere. Someone had looted her refrigerator and dumped the food on the floor. It had been there two weeks by the time we got there. Needless to say, the smell was incredible.
But hidden under that nasty mess, was her silverware. So we uncovered it and reclaimed it for her. We later found her dentures and other personal items under a collapsed wall. Photo's that had been drenched were buried around her property and we recovered those as well.
In the second house we were in, the front door of the stove was blown off but on top of the stove, the pan that held the evening meal, was still in tack, not even touched. It was an amazing thing to think that wind can do so much damage and then a foot away, it's not touched at all.
It was difficult to dig through the rubble just to give the families something to hold on to. It was even more difficult for me on Sunday morning as we held a worship service in the front yard of a house about to be demolished. I sang, "Save Me" and could barely contain my emotions. These people in minutes, lost everything they had, everything they worked for. Most have insurance but some do not. No one will be able to reclaim what was lost on April 27th.
I am thankful for what the Lord has blessed me with but I am more thankful that He has given me a heart to see and an ear to hear. Every trip I am on, I find His heart. This trip, I saw Him birthing hope out of the rubble. Though we don't always immediately feel Him, He is there bringing life out of death because that's the kind of God He is. I am just glad to be a part of what He is doing.
